NEW WORK

November 12 - December 19, 2009

Opens Thursday, November 12, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Bill Brady ~ ATM gallery is please to present New Work, a solo exhibition of Min Kim.

Min Kim's disparate installation pieces are a result of an attempt to rationalize and comprehend the allusive bindings that sustain our intricately woven existence. Kim's constant inquiry into the contingencies of identity, home and the structure of our inner and outer world functions as means to construct a place that slips between the margins of the tangible and fleeting spaces.

The intuitive processes of using emblematic imagery and the implications of dreams, as well as an exploration of the intermediary attributes of shamanistic beliefs filtered through everyday experiences, yield grounds for the artist to steer, unravel and exorcize the complex meaning and motivations of our interiority.

The eight installation pieces in the exhibition combine the techniques associated with drawing, painting, collage and sculpture. The idiosyncrasies of each piece activate the contextual and spatial relationships between other works in the group.

Use of the often understated or fragile materials carry the weight of vulnerability and uncertainty of our perception. This parallels Kim's precarious construction of the pieces, her use of variably paired materials, and their specific arrangements in the gallery. Detailed manipulation of the materials beckons the viewer to participate in visually manifested psychological space.

Kim's net of investigation is cast wide to the ambiguity of the human experience for observation and reflection; a process that translates and transforms the findings into a space of elasticity.

Min Kim was born in 1975 in Seoul, Korea and now lives and works in New York. She earned BFA from Maryland Institute, College of Art. She had solo exhibitions in Torch gallery, Amsterdam; Galleria Glance,Turin; Bell Weather Gallery, NY and Marc Selwyn gallery, LA. She also has participated in group exhibitions in P.S.1 New York; Seoul Arts Center, Seoul; Martini Arte Internazionale, Turin.

Opening Thursday September 10th 6-8pm
September 10 - October 17, 2009

ATM Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo show of 28 year old, UCLA graduate, Virginia Martinsen. The title of this exhibition of paintings, A Face on Mars, reveals Martinsen's fascination with the human need for companionship and search for a higher power. The fact that people find images of Jesus Christ on the side of a tree, on a piece of cloth or even a piece of toast alludes to the concept that people find references to human figures or images identifiable by our society in almost anything, and whether consciously or not we are searching for them.

Virginia's paintings are created by pouring liquid paint and dry pigments onto canvases that are positioned flat on the floor. The paint is then left to settle onto the canvas, sometimes creating large pools of paint, and with no further manipulation they take on their own form. The resulting formations are the product of gravity on the canvas, which is forced to stretch accommodating the weight of the paint. As the paint travels over the surface of the canvas the pigments and oil separate from the varnish and mediums, streaks and clumps of paint are created, both solidifying and evaporating. Eventually, dried out circular forms, by-products of the painting process, become centers of some of the paintings.

Her painting process is informed by her many visits with Austrian Actionist Hermann Nitsch at his castle in Prinzendorf, Austria, where she was inspired by Nitsch's concept of a pour or splatter of paint referencing a stab with a knife, or an extensive experience of existence.

Martinsen's title "A Face on Mars" refers to the images brought back from Viking 1 taken in 1976, revealing an image that appeared to be a humanoid face on the surface of Mars. People believed that this was an indication of alien life; however latter pictures revealed that the original image of the face was simply the result of shadows and camera angle. Our reaction to those images reveals our desire to know that we are not alone and also to identify something familiar in the unknown. Martinsen's abstract paintings are based on her fascination with the human need to identify with or find a familiarity in the unknown.

Virginia Martinsen lives and works in New York.

ATM Gallery is pleased to announce Building Beijing 2008, an exhibition of color photographs by Benjamin Collier. The exhibition will be open by appointment from August 7 - 30, 2008, with an opening ceremony on Thursday, August 7, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Timed to coincide with the 2008 summer Olympics, Building Beijing 2008 documents the construction of the Olympic Village and surrounding sites through the eyes of the many thousands of migrant workers who have silently shaped the city's intensely mutable landscape into a vision of gleaming modernity.

Lately much of the world has been focused on China's poor human rights record and controversial political alliances, while its workers have quietly carried out a ferociously ambitious building program in preparation for the impending games. Collier's photographs offer a rare glimpse into the lives of these workers, capturing the routine of their existence in a spare, evocative style that feels unsettlingly intimate. Images of dormitory rooms and work sites are shown alongside rows of close-cropped portraiture, imbuing both with a profound sense of immediacy. As such, everyday objects like workers bike racks and empty stadium seats take on new meaning when seen in this context. Overall, Collier's photographs tell a story larger than their individual subjects- that of a city, a country, and a culture in transition, waiting to be revealed to the world.

Half of all profits from the show will support Wokai, a pioneering Chinese Microfinance Nonprofit. To learn more about Wokai, please visit www.wokai.org

Benjamin Collier's photographs were featured in The Photo Show at ATM Gallery in 2003 as well as in ATM's I Love NY Art Benefit in 2001. His work has been shown in several solo and group exhibitions at Gallery Katz, in Boston, MA, and is included in the permanent collections of American Express, Brown University, Google, Wellington Management, and many private patrons. In addition, Collier's documentary film, "Wooden Bats & Dusty Hands: The Grays" is currently showing on PBS.

Benjamin Collier was born in Massachusetts in 1978. He received his BA in Art-Semiotics, a dual concentration combining Modern Culture and Media with Visual Art, from Brown University in 2002 and is currently pursuing his MS in Strategic Communications from Columbia University.
We are pleased to announce the second New York solo exhibition at ATM Gallery by Miguel Ângelo Rocha. For this exhibition the artist is presenting a series of six small wall pieces. Delicately assembled of found objects and constructed forms, Rocha completes each composition with an attention to the materiality and weight of each fragment, applying subtle layers to a semblance concerned with balance and illusion. The material choices range from the weight and aesthetic of a thin painted line to a bulky PVC pipe. Blown glass, cut cardboard, and molded paper all contribute to these simple and weightless arrangements. Rocha investigates the polarity and juxtaposition of varying aesthetics, combining both two and three - dimensional methods of art making to present pieces that have the sense of drawings in physical space.

Miguel Ângelo Rocha was born in 1964 in Lisbon, Portugal, and continues to live and work there as well as in New York. After completing his degree in painting from the Faculdad de Belas-Artes in Lisbon, he completed a Master in Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Since receiving his degree in painting he has continued to explore the possibilities of line, material, and form in his sculptural pursuits. He has exhibited regularly since 1991, and among his individual shows are "Retratos de Mário Eloy" at Museu do Chiado, Lisbon, 1996 (Pedro Lapa, Curator); "Three of a Perfect Pair" at Laure Genillard Gallery, London, 1996; "Kafka´s Hotel" at the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery, Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center, New York, 2000; Ram, Roterdam, 2001; "Duplo/Double", at the Círculo de Artes Plásticas in Coimbra, 2002; "Mound I", at Módulo - Centro Difusor de Arte, Lisbon, 2004; "Voz/Voice", at Hospital Júlio de Matos, Lisbon, 2005; "1 Moment: 9 Sentences and 1 Volume", at Lisboa 20 Arte Contemporânea, Lisbon, 2006; and " Four Odd Numbers", at Fundação Carmona e Costa, Lisbon, 2006.
